on Our Town & Slavery: Irvington, NY will be held on Sunday, February 23rd at 12:00 pm in the Auditorium. Join Sarah Cox and Cathy Sears for a fascinating lecture about the history of slavery in Irvington, based in part on their research and article published in the Irvington Historical Society’s The Roost (Winter 2018). Sarah and Cathy have found 15 named enslaved Africans and their descendants that lived and toiled in historic Irvington, and who represent the many unidentified men, women and children in this town that remain mere numbers on census records. They will briefly discuss the history of slavery (including servitude and bondage) in New York State, decode the original historical documents they uncovered, and talk about the reported enslaved African burial ground in Irvington. Sarah Cox is an educator at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow and Cathy Sears is a journalist and researcher working on a book about this subject.
